FDA Approves New Treatment for Tennis Elbow

JUST IN TIME FOR OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES IN OKLAHOMA, The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced it's approval for the high energy OssaTron® orthopaedic shock wave device for the treatment of chronic lateral epicondylitis, or Tennis Elbow. The OssaTron® is the only high-energy, onetime treatment shock wave device approved for treatment of this painful condition. The OssaTron® is already approved for the treatment of plantar fasciitis (heel spurs) and now becomes the only device approved for multiple indications.

Tennis elbow is most often associated with overuse of the arm in a wide variety of activities associated with work and play. Traditionally, the only alternative for patients who do not respond to conservative non-surgical treatment was an invasive surgical procedure. The invasive procedures typically have extended recovery times and may be associated with significant complications and poor outcomes.

OssaTron® Orthotripsy® is a non-invasive procedure for orthopedic applications. Orthotripsy utilizes the same technology as lithotripsy for kidney stones. Using very strong acoustic (sound) waves to 'shock' the area, it decreases inflammation to the tendon or fascia, and promotes the body's natural healing process. Although it is performed in an outpatient surgery center, the patient can go back normal activities the next day.

Dr. R.J. Langerman, Jr., orthopaedic surgeon of Southwest Orthopaedics in Oklahoma City has been vital in the research of this state-of-the-art technology. "After treating over 800 cases of plantar fasciitis (heel spurs and over 100 tennis elbows with the Orthotripsy® procedure, I have seen first hand the phenomenal success. The procedure is safe, effective and allows the patient to get back to the normal activities right away. This technology is an excellent adjunct to conservative care, eliminating risks of infection and the long recovery of open surgical procedures. OssaTron® Orthotripsy will soon become standard care medicine for multiple chronic tendonosis."
